Dress code scandal!
A principal in Utah had to apologize to students Monday
for the school’s unclear dress code after many of the girls were banned from
their homecoming dance because their dresses were too short.
Called the, “Stansbury High Homecoming Spirit Massacre,”
angry students and parents wrote all over Facebook and tweeted all over twitter
about the incident. "I understand rules; I think there should be rules,
but they need to be realistic.” Said one of the parents on Facebook. From what
I’ve read the rules were not properly displayed, and the students and parents
didn’t know the rules. I understand that ignorance of the law is no excuse but
these are fairly innocent kids that are my age and I understand the way they
feel. Lots of students expressed theirdisappointment
after half of the students did not go to the dance after their friends and
dates were stopped at the door. The principal promised them a free dance Monday
after so much criticism. If this happened at my school I would honestly think
twice about helping the school out in any way. Frankly I would be pretty mad.
Some boys didn’t go because their dates couldn’t go. So that means they have to
rent another tuxedo or pay for another limo or something like that out of their
or their parents own pocket. Plus It’s technically not homecoming if it’s a week
later so lots of students missed out on a once in a lifetime thing. Considering
the dress code at our school these girl’s dresses did not seem to be hurting much.
Our dress code is 6 inches above the knee on a normal day; I’m not sure what it says about formal clothes.
Stansbury’s
dress code for formal wear says “At
or around the knee”
for formal clothing, and as said earlier one student was asked to leave for a
dress that was 2 inches above her knee. Honestly, that is ridiculous; I
understand the need for modesty and protecting people’s self image. I also I understand it was a
school function, but the rules were not properly displayed and not enforced the
way I would do it so therefore I think it’s wrong and the parents and students have a
right to be very upset.
Some of those student and there dates banned
from homecoming.
